BACKGROUND<\/strong><\/p>\n

The draft Malaysian Criteria and Indicators for Forest Management Certification (Forest Plantations) or in short the MC&I(Forest Plantations) was subjected to public consultation\/comment over a 60-day duration from 30 April to 30 June 2007.<\/p>\n

The notification for public consultation\/comment on the draft MC&I(Forest Plantations) was made through the MTCC website, MTCC Newsletter, via e-mail as well as air-mail where soft\/hard copies of the draft standard were enclosed and sent to 144 organizations <\/a>representing the various social, economic and environmental stakeholder groups, and relevant government agencies in Malaysia, to solicit their comments and feedback on the draft standard.<\/p>\n

As a result of the public consultation, a total of six (6) comments were received from the Malaysian stakeholders with regard to the draft standard.\u00a0 A summary of the comments received was compiled by the Secretariat of the National Steering Committee (NSC) as shown in Table 1<\/a>.<\/p>\n

DEVELOPMENTS<\/strong><\/p>\n

The comments received from the Malaysian stakeholders were deliberated by the Fourth Meeting of the Technical Working Group (TWG) for the development of the MC&I(Forest Plantations) held on 21 August 2007.\u00a0 The outcome of the deliberation by the TWG is tabulated in Table 2<\/a>.<\/p>\n

As a result of the Fourth Meeting of the TWG, a revised draft of the MC&I(Forest Plantations)<\/a> has been prepared by the NSC Secretariat.<\/p>\n

Based on the \u201cRules on Standard Setting Process for Development of Malaysian Criteria and Indicators for Forest Management Certification (Forest Plantations)<\/a>,\u201d the Fourth Meeting of the TWG agreed that the draft MC&I(Forest Plantations) has already been subject to a national consultation from 30 April to 30 June 2007 and therefore proposed that the draft standard be subjected to field testing in the three regions of Malaysia, i.e. Sabah, Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia.\u00a0 The TWG has also agreed to revise the timeline<\/a> for the development of the MC&I(Forest Plantations) accordingly.<\/p>\n

The field test of the draft MC&I(Forest Plantations) will be conducted by independent assessors to be appointed by the NSC Secretariat.\u00a0 A representative each from the\u00a0 various stakeholder groups (social, environmental, econoimc and relevant government agencies) will be invited to participate in the field tests in the respective region as observers.<\/p>\n
